American Association of University Women (AAUW) – Amador Branch is showcasing educational opportunities for women and girls at their Trek To New Heights Program on Thursday, October 22, 2015 from 6:00-7:30 PM in Conference Room ABCD of the HHS Building located at 10877 Conductor Blvd., Sutter Creek. AAUW membership and the public are invited to attend.
The program will highlight Tech Trek, a science and math summer camp, designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women during the summer before their 8th grade year. The camp features hands-on activities in math, science, and related fields and is held on the campus of California State University at Fresno for Amador County students. The girls were chosen through a selection process that includes a teacher recommendation, followed by an application, an essay and an interview by AAUW members. AAUW Amador supports this program with scholarships from money raised through the annual Home Tour. Summer 2015 Tech Trek Campers will share their experiences at this event.
The second featured program is the Amador Learning Center, founded by the Amador Community College Foundation (ACCF), offering distance education degree and certificate programs through participating regional and state community colleges. The Amador Learning Center has served over 169 students since May 2013, 74% of whom have been women that find the flexible distance education solutions offered meet their academic needs and busy lifestyles. In addition, the Amador Learning Center provides academic assistance in college application, orientation, financial aid, assessment, course registration, textbook purchase, tutoring, and ongoing mentoring. A computer lab is available for student use. A tour of the Amador Learning Center will be conducted. Student speakers will share their experiences with the Amador Learning Center and how it provided the opportunity for them to further their education locally.
AAUW is committed to bringing together graduates of various institutions to promote educational equity for all women and girls. Membership is open to all those with an associate, baccalaureate, or higher degree and are interested in making a positive impact on the lives of women and girls. We invite you to join us.
