Online Public School Students Celebrate Academic Achievements, Continue to Distinguished Universities
Ripon, Calif. (June 23, 2017) – California Connections Academy at Ripon, a tuition-free online public school serving students in grades K-12, graduated more than 100 high school seniors at a commencement ceremony held at the San Joaquin Delta Community College in Stockton on Friday, June 23. Kara Mannix, high school principal, Dr. Richard Savage, the school’s executive director, Heath Flora, the assemblyman for District 12, and Shide Dehghani (pictured below), the 2017 valedictorian, delivered inspiring remarks as hundreds of family members, friends, teachers and administrators filled the audience to honor the students’ accomplishments.
“Right before the start of 11th grade, after years and years of going back and forth between Iran and America, my family and I decided that we should stay, and I should continue my education in the States,” said Dehghani. “I chose Connections that summer because I knew that amongst other reasons, I loved independent study.”
Dehghani of Berkeley, will head to the University of California, Berkeley to double major in computer science and mathematics, and salutatorian Jerry Qian of San Jose, will attend the University of Toronto to major in computer science with a strong interest in computer coding. Many students have attended online school to help balance personal interests, including Priscilla Chau who recently won third in senior level at a national figure skating competition in Hong Kong and will pursue journalism at University of California, Los Angeles.
“We are exceptionally proud of our 2017 graduating class,” said Amy Hunt, site administrator at California Connections Academy @ Ripon. “These graduating seniors pursued a unique learning path, which will continue to distinguish them as innovative self-starters who will excel in our digital and global society.”
Additional students from the 2017 graduating class will go on to pursue higher education at institutions including San Jose State University, John Hopkins University, University of California, Riverside, University of California, Davis, University of Oregon, among others.
Dehghani concluded, “I encourage each of you to go out and explore, be scared, find out who you truly are, get lost, find yourself and in that exploration, you’ll find greatness.”
